Gallery at Marina Square Presents a “Close Up” of Artist:

Jeff Odell

Jeff Odell
Oil painter Jeff Odell has created visual images since early childhood. He began his formal art education at Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, California, and completed upper division studies at the Kansas City art Institute, earning a BFA in painting in 1979.

A major influence at KCAI was his experience in the painting studio of nationally recognized painter and Professor Emeritus Wilbur Niewald, who divided the act of painting into two categories: “visual painting,” executed directly from the observation of the subject in real time and space; and “conceptual painting,” executed from sources other than direct observation, such as photos, drawings, computer, and the imagination. Niewald taught that the only way to get at the visual truth of color is to work directly from nature.
